About This Place

Wo Hop stands as a timeless gem in the heart of New York City’s Chinatown, offering an authentic Cantonese dining experience since 1938. Nestled at 17 Mott Street, this iconic restaurant invites you into a world where classic flavors and rich heritage blend seamlessly, creating a culinary journey that both locals and visitors cherish.

The menu at Wo Hop is a delightful showcase of Cantonese favorites that excite the palate and soothe the soul. From the comforting warmth of their Hot and Sour Soup to the savory indulgence of Beef Young Sing Chow Fon, each dish delivers a masterful balance of traditional spices and fresh ingredients. The Pineapple Chicken offers a slightly sweet contrast to the bold, peppery Kung Pao Chicken, while the Salt and Pepper Squid provides a crispy, flavorful bite that perfectly complements the more tender options like Wor Shu Duck and Roast Pork Fried Rice.

Wo Hop's renowned Lo Mein and Chow Mai Fun – particularly the house special lo mein noodles – are stir-fried to perfection, coated in savory sauces that cling to each strand of noodle, offering rich umami with every mouthful. Seafood lovers will gravitate toward the delicate Lobster Cantonese or the fresh Shrimp Lo Mein, both bursting with authentic flavors that pay homage to classic Cantonese cuisine.

The atmosphere is a key part of Wo Hop’s enduring charm. The legendary basement dining room, favored by many regulars, exudes an old-school New York Chinatown vibe with its cozy, no-frills environment that feels like stepping back in time. The contrast upstairs offers a slightly more spacious setting with menu items that some say are even more authentic in flavor. Whether you choose the bustling downstairs or the more spacious upstairs, expect efficient and friendly service delivered with genuine warmth—something customers repeatedly praise.

Many diners, like Maling Sun, rave about the bilingual staff, the fast-paced yet personable service, and the seamless, well-oiled system that effortlessly handles busy crowds. Regulars like RJ A highlight the comforting nature of dishes such as egg foo young and squid, and the consistent quality that keeps them coming back. Even amid the crowd and occasional wait, the experience remains deeply rewarding, with hearty portions and flavors that resonate well beyond the meal.

There is an undeniable energy that fills Wo Hop—where quick conversations in Cantonese blend with the clinking of glasses filled with Tsingtao beer, and plates arrive steaming hot to tables full of friends and families celebrating special occasions, just as Elisabeth Gasser did. The value here is remarkable, with feasts that fill both stomach and spirit at surprisingly accessible prices.

For anyone looking to dive into a truly classic NYC Chinese restaurant experience, Wo Hop offers more than just a meal; it offers a vibrant connection to Chinatown’s culinary soul, with dishes that are richly flavored, thoughtfully prepared, and served in an atmosphere pulsing with history. It’s a must-visit for those eager to taste Cantonese tradition done right and to savor a unique slice of New York City’s food culture.

Upstairs vs. Downstairs? Now I’ve done both! On a previous NYC trip, I dined in the upstairs expansion for a more "authentic" menu, but this time it was all about the history. We headed down to the legendary basement at Wo Hop for that 1938, old-school vibe. We chatted in Cantonese with the wonderful staff, who confirmed the local secret: go upstairs for authentic Cantonese, but stay downstairs for the nostalgic "American-Chinese" classics. We decided to stay put in the basement! My husband even took charge and customized a dish that turned out absolutely yummy. . I haven't seen fortune cookie in since I was little :). So fun! Being from Vancouver, I’m lucky to have access to world-class Chinese food, so I have high standards—but Wo Hop definitely holds its own for flavour and atmosphere. A must-visit for the history alone! Secretly, I wanted to dine here as I loved the show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, where Midge Maisel and Lenny Bruce share a scene sitting at a booth with the American bills taped on the wall, like a wall paper.

They have a first floor and basement, we hit the basement. Staff friendly, they seem to have great system serving dishes, staff is friendly and efficient. Food was real good, comfort food went with egg foo young and squid. It was delicious, will go back and try other dishes. Can get real busy. Flavor was on point. Left very satisfied and full.

What a classic nyc Chinese restaurant! Very cool atmosphere. The service is quick and servers are super nice. The fried rice was incredible and the veggies but the pineapple duck wasn’t good! It was super sweet and the pink sauce definitely doesn’t help. Maybe next time will get classic dishes not some sort of specials.

Wow, the wait to get in was long! Was it worth it? Well the favor was different from the Chinese food I’m accustomed too. Not offensive but definitely different. Egg rolls were amazing! Service was top notch we got along with our server, an instant rapport was created! He was witty, sarcastic, funny and genuine. They can cook to your dietary needs.

Delicious and absolutely classic NY restaurant. The service here is direct and fast paced, as is common in Chinatown. I celebrated my birthday here with a party of 10!! They set up a table just for us, despite not taking reservations. We had a FEAST of food, for less than 25$ per person, including beers. Come here with friends and eat up! Make sure to order the duck fried rice, a Lo mein, and the snow peas with bean sprouts. They do all of the Cantonese-American classics well, so really order anything. Everyone was so fun and kind. We were cracking jokes all night and they even gave me a free Wo Hop t-shirt for my birthday! Love these guysssss.

Authentic Chinese food. Reminds me of back in the days Chinese restaurants. For those that know, know lol. The service is great, restaurant isn’t huge but it’s workable. Spacious enough to not feel on top of the next person. We ordered shrimp and garlic with with fried rice, and shrimp lo mein. Sooooooo good. Hands down the best. Definitely going back. Think I found my new spot
